This town, which houses the famous Palio the 2nd July and the 16th August in its characteristic shell-shaped square, offers also to the visitor several important and interesting monuments. The piazza del Campo is surrounded by important buildings, in the Town Hall you can admire the beautiful fresco by Ambrogio Lorenzetti called "Buon Governo" (XVIIIth century). But the monuments are not the only attration of Siena, here you can walk through the old streets, visit all the contrade ( the tipical quarters) and taste the good and simple cooking of Toscana and its wines as the famous Brunello, that comes from Montalcino, and the no way inferior Morellino from Scansano. In the famous Divina Commedia by Dante the pope Martino IV remembers the eels of Bolsena and the vernaccia ( a red wine) of San Giminiano, a village famous also for its several aristocratic towers.The fourteen towers of the walls of Monteriggioni are quoted, as other places of this region, in the Divina Commedia. The Rennaisance Pienza dues its beauty to a great man, the humanist pope Pio II Piccolomini. Here the famous producer Bertolucci set its movie "Io ballo da sola". Volterra on the contrary has Etruscan origins, here you can visit the interesting museum consecreted to this great civilisation, with splendid alabaster hand-made objects that you can now buy in the several shops. If you prefer a relaxing resort choose the spa in Pitigliano, Sorano and Santa Fiona old Rennaisance and Middle Ages villages.
