Pisa

The glorious Maritime Republic of Pisa dominated this part of the Tirrehenian coastal area. Its maritime power developed on the whole Tyrrhenian sea from Portovenere to Civitavecchia. Thanks to its wide extension, Pisa maintains the characteristic of "open town" stretching towards the sea which was much nearer in the past.
Pisa is surrounded by walls that partly prevent the view of its world-wide famous"Piazza dei Miracoli".
Its walls differ from the austere walls that enclosed medieval towns, in fact they served as a "warding post" for women who waited for their mates coming back from maritime enterprises. Round the white and green area called "Campo dei Miracoli" a mild plain, surrounded by marvellous pines, stretches towards the sea.
